101 SKIN SCHOOL

What is pH?
The term “pH” refers to “potential of hydrogen”. The pH of a solution is indicated by a numeric scale that runs from 0-14. Anything below 7 (which is pH neutral) is considered acidic, while anything with a pH greater than 7 is considered alkaline.

What is the pH of Skin?
It might surprise you to find out that skin’s surface and uppermost layers are naturally acidic, making it compatible with acidic skin care products. The acid-alkaline balance of the skin, measured as the pH level, is the key to excellent skin care. The pH of the skin is acidic and measured roughly to be 4.5 during the night (at sleep) and then upwards of 5.5 during the day. Derma-Ceutix products are made to penetrate into the skin to work & help achieve your skin care goals!

The goal for proper skin care is to look at both Day and Night:
Day: Cleanse & Protect
Night: Restore & Repair

Most skin care products on the market are 10 – 12 pH which leads to dry skin (because of the alkalinity) and certainly will not penetrate the skin where it is desired.

Cellular Regeneration
It takes 28 days for a new skin cell produced in a 20-year-old individual to rise to the surface, but it takes 90 days for the same to occur in a 50-year-old. This slowing of the skin regeneration process allows for more time to dry-out the skin and create signs of the aging process. You can speed up that Cellular Turnover with Derma-Ceutix Products & Customized Treatments with your local Esthetician.

Why does Sunscreen need to be part of your Daily Skin Care Regimen?

Sunscreen should be at the top of your skincare routine regimen! Daily and consistent use of sunscreen helps to prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles, textural imperfections, and changes in the appearance of pores over time. Sunscreen is one of the most important tools you have in your skin care regimen! For optimal skin care results when using Derma-Ceutix products SPF needs to be part of your daily regimen 365 days a year, rain or shine!

Why Should I Get Professional Treatments Done with my Local Esthetician if I am using Skin Care Products at home?
Professionally provided Rejuvenation (chemical) peels are an important part of skin health. Derma-Ceutix peels are made from natural derivatives such as sugar cane & willow bark. As an effective treatment option for most skin types and concerns, they improve tone & texture, fine lines/wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, & acne.

These treatments will slough off the top layer of dead, compromised skin allowing your home care products to penetrate deeper into the skin to provide maximum results. We compare this combination to “Diet & Exercise” for the skin. You can get results from one or the other, but the pair provides the best, quickest results! Consult with your Local Esthetician to see what peel suits your skin type, lifestyle, and skin goals!

Using Skin Care Products while Pregnant or Breastfeeding?
Products containing potent acne fighting & anti-aging ingredients — like prescription retinoids, over-the-counter retinols, hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid, to name a few — are not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We recommend always consulting with your physician before using skin care products. Derma-Ceutix products that contain those ingredients are Salicylic Cleanser, Glycolic Salicylic Astringent, Face Cleansing Pads, Retinol Cream (Vitamin A), Lifting & Pore Fortifying Cream, Acne Spot Treatment, & Acne Relief Mask.

PRODUCT INGREDIENTS & THEIR BENEFITS

I see a lot of products that say Glycolic is beneficial for Anti-Aging why is that?
Glycolic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (or AHA). It’s an exfoliant that helps shed dead skin cells resulting in improved skin texture, tone, and a brighter healthier complexion. It’s light and easily penetrates your skin to stimulate collagen production & helps skin feel firmer and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. Using low concentrations of glycolic over long periods of time creates a cumulative effect; your skin will look better the longer you use it! Products that contain Glycolic are not for People with dry, highly sensitive skin, & they often react to it with irritation.

What is Salicylic & how is it beneficial to people with Acneic or Oily Skin?
Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA). Salicylic acid is a beneficial ingredient for those with oily and acne-prone skin, as well as other skin concerns. Products that contain salicylic ingredients can help to clear out excess oils from the skin and reduce sebum levels. Salicylic is also a highly effective astringent that can minimize the appearance of pores by tightening the skin. Salicylic acid works best on blackheads, whiteheads, & P. acnes bacteria.

What is Hyaluronic & why is it beneficial for my skin?
Hyaluronic is a substance that occurs naturally in your body—in your joints, eyes, and—yes—skin. Hyaluronic does not occur naturally on the surface of your skin, but when applied topically in your skin care routine it works in the skin as a moisturizer. When applying Hyaluronic to your skin, it works as a humectant. Humectants pull water from the environment into your skin which will help keep your skin plump & hydrated throughout the day to make your skin more radiant and smoother. Everyone needs Hyaluronic in their daily skin care routine!

What is Ellagic & why is it beneficial for my skin?
Ellagic Acid is an impressive antioxidant compound with anti-aging properties. Found in nuts, vegetables and fruits-and especially abundant in pomegranate, cranberries, strawberries and raspberries. In studies Ellagic Acid was found to obstruct the production of collagen damaging MMP enzymes and inhibit ICAM, a molecule that plays a part in inflammation. Ellagic acid is already believed by many experts to slow the growth of cancer cells, and now, these study authors surmise that wrinkle prevention and sun-damage defense should be added to its list of demonstrated benefits.

What is Lifting & Pore Fortifying Cream & why is it beneficial for my skin?
This product contains a Blend of Glycolic, Salicylic & Emblica! This helps refine your pores and protect from free radical damage which can lead to enlarged pores.  Glycolic is an exfoliant that helps shed dead skin cells resulting in improved skin texture, tone, and a brighter healthier complexion. Using low concentrations of glycolic over long periods of time creates a cumulative effect; your skin will look better the longer you use it! Products that contain salicylic ingredients help to clear out excess oils from the skin and reduce sebum levels & minimize the appearance of pores by tightening the skin. Emblica is a potent antioxidant that helps protect human dermal fibroblasts against free radicals & oxidative stress to combat the aging process.

What is Emblica & why is it beneficial for my skin?
Emblica officinalis (also known as Phyllanthus emblica, Indian gooseberry, or by its Hindi name amla) is a deciduous tree, the fruit of which is a rich dietary source of vitamin C as well as various minerals, amino acids, and phenolic compounds. What is Retinol (Vitamin A) & why is it beneficial for my skin?
This is an active anti-aging ingredient and an effective substance for the care of UV damaged and aging skin. Retinol accelerates mitosis, normalizes keratinization, and increases enzyme activity. Retinoids are essentially a form of vitamin A they help fight acne, reduce wrinkles, stimulate collagen, and promote cellular turnover. Our Retinol helps even out skin tone and smooth skin texture!

What is Super C Serum & why is it beneficial for my skin?
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, stimulates collagen to help keep your skin plump & radiant. On top of that, vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it protects skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure. It also inhibits melanin production in the skin, which helps to lighten hyperpigmentation and brown spots, even out skin tone, and enhance skin radiance.

What is Vitamin K Repair & why is it beneficial for my skin?
Vitamin K is found in many eye creams & can be your secret weapon against dark circles! Research has found vitamin K to speed up the natural healing and repair process in damaged skin while others have shown it to clear up bruises more quickly. The Vitamin K ingredient is often found in creams used post-aesthetic procedure such as chemical peels, fillers or laser treatments. It helps with the appearance of broken capillaries and their associated issues like rosacea. Optimum results for broken capillaries are best paired with laser and Vitamin K topically applied as they are usually a reoccurring issue.

What is Mandelic & why is it beneficial for my skin?
Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). Due to its larger molecular structure, mandelic doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply as its sister glycolic, so its gentler on the skin. It’s an exfoliant that helps shed dead skin cells resulting in improved skin texture, tone, and a brighter healthier complexion.  Mandelic also has antibacterial properties which are extremely helpful in treating acne. It also helps to regulate sebum production and in turn decrease the occurrence of breakouts.

What is Squalane & why is it beneficial for my skin?
Squalane balances oil production, providing just enough moisture to keep the skin clear and healthy. Squalane oil fights off skin-damaging free radicals that contribute to the signs of aging. Squalane’s powerful anti-aging properties and will help the skin age gracefully as well as anti-inflammatory benefits to help with skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Why should I use a Glycolic/Salicylic Astringent on my skin?
Derma-Ceutix Astringent contains a Blend of Glycolic & Salicylic. Glycolic is an exfoliant that helps shed dead skin cells resulting in improved skin texture, tone, and a brighter healthier complexion. Using low concentrations of glycolic over long periods of time creates a cumulative effect; your skin will look better the longer you use it! Salicylic is a beneficial astringent ingredient for those with oily and acne-prone skin, as well as other skin concerns. Products that contain salicylic ingredients help to clear out excess oils from the skin and reduce sebum levels & minimize the appearance of pores by tightening the skin.

Why should I use a Hydrating Vitamin Mist on my skin?
Our Hydrating Vitamin Mist is Enriched with Vitamin B, C, E & Ellagic Acid to aid in soothing redness in the skin. When used in your morning routine it helps fight off free radicals that our skin battles throughout the day. Free radicals can lead to premature aging of the skin. If your skin is prone to sensitivity, a face mist can also help take down redness, calm irritation and replenish lost moisture. It can be used through out the day for an instant hydration.

What is DMAE Organic Firming Agent & why is it beneficial for my skin?
DMAE, (dimethylaminoethanol) is used to help firm & tighten skin as well as reduce fine lines and wrinkles. DMAE is a naturally occurring nutrient that can be found in foods such as sardines & anchovies and other organic materials. DMAE has been shown to provide cumulative tightening effects on the skin and reduce signs of aging.

What are Peptides & why are they beneficial for my skin?
Peptides are strings of amino acids, which are the building blocks that make up proteins in our body, including collagen in the skin. Peptides penetrate the top layer of the skin, where they go to work delivering their anti-aging benefits, like stimulating collagen production and fighting fine lines and wrinkles. Some peptides, called hexapeptides, have a relaxing effect on your facial muscles, helping to minimize movement and the formation of wrinkles in a way which is similar to Botox. Other peptides such as palmitoyl oligopeptide and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, stimulate skin growth and repair, fight inflammation, and protect against UV damage.
